Hi Folks

I am now totally bamboozled
I am getting identifications that range from sub adult L066 to L400.

Any one care to take a stab at what they are or is this fish the proof that all Hypans are hybrids and only a few species are true independent species?

They have the big eyes and almost golden tinge under light like all the L173s I've seen photoed before. But please remember I am still learning, no basis for what i say.

I am almost convinced they are L173 as I have seen L173 that others have and they are the same.

BUT god knows what they are. On PC I am told they are sub adult L066 this is what I brought them as, but having spawned and having the gold eyes with the white belly I am more, confused. The under stripe is lighter than the photo shows.

They also don't look chunky enough IMO to be L66. They look mre like adult L129 or similar smaller hypans if you see what I mean body shape wise

They dont look like the L173s on PC, Arnt they ment to resemble zebra plecos. could be L399/400 or like you say could quite easly be a hybrid of some kind, was they a wild fish or a uk tank bred that someone took to them?

I do think they are tank breed brought as L066 from a shop who imported from Germany

well done, good news. are they all the same speciecs? just some of the pics look different
I have some small hypans L340 which are a similar size and i think ready to breed soon. so maybe small hypans will bevome more popular.

To be honest I am just calling them small hypans that have spawned.
Sod L Numbers they are just a pain LOL

From now on it is
spoted hypan stripe hypan and scribble hypan

Stuff L 066 with a bit of L173 and some L400.

spots stripes and scribbles.

I do suspect they are a product from a batch that were given to some breeders in Europe and have been crossed with every thing.
Regards bob

These look very similar to the ones I bought from Jozebs earlier this year that were tank bred and imported from Germany although my male is quite large at 3" total length with massive tail extensions :D

I have seen pics in the Aqualog book and mine look identical to a couple of photos that are on there

Help

Now the male who had fry in the cave has forced a female in and now has a ruddy great clump of eggs in the cave.
I can’t see the fry anywhere I am worried they were eaten by the dad, they were about 8 days old
My fear is he being a new dad wants sex more than to provide me with 100,s of baby fish to sell.

I suspect that having a surfeit of females this male is just spawning for the sake of it.
Now my fear is that he will just carry on spawning and either eat or reject the fry every time.
If remove cave dad and eggs to new tank using water from the old tank would it work?
New tank has a few fry in it and been running for several weeks.

What about a large breeding trap that will fit a cave in do you have one? can be left in the main tank that way
Spot on.
Mr complicated here has covered every crazy scheme but that top ho breeder Joe has spotted an easy way to do things

Well that sort of worked
Once in the trap the male dived out of the cave so I hooked the cave out and around 10 eggs in side but not a singale baby from the 1st spawn?

Must have got out or been eaten.

Eggs now in a fry saver and i will see how it works out
