Just caught up with your pics Matt.. and made the mistake of showing the missus..

Now she wants to add a Royal. We had one a long time agoe and it was awesome..

Are there any that stop at 10-12"??
All of the 'Royals' (P. nigrolineatus/armbrusteri/titan etc) get larger than that. But it's not like they'll suddenly grow massive and overburden you. You could try P. bathyphilus aka 'Papa Panaque/L090' I haven't seen/heard a wiff of one much over 30cm, or the Panaque 'Arabesque/L425' that Pier Aquatics have.

You could also try Hypostomus cochliodon/soniae as they are pretty similar to Panaque.

Hi matt, nice to see your still gripped by the panaque/royal bug good and hard! There a good looking bunch you must be proud :).
I've had my wavering moments but they still have a hold on me and I've still got big ambitions with them. I'm looking forward to seeing them in the shops again, shouldn't be too long now.

How are yours doing? Do you still have the L027 Araguaia's/Goldine?

I knew as much but hoped something new had come to light in the near 20 years since I had my last one..

I have a Soniae, Green Phantom and Leopard Cactus in the tank too..

Ta mate.. reckon a Royal will have to wait (until the fish room is up and running)..

Yeah I still have old warty:), he is looking like an old man now days compared to his younger identical brother, Im not sure I ever posted a pic of him so I will dust off the camera. Im looking to move a couple of plecs on to ease the load on my filters, they have all grown big and fat over the last 2 years lol. If you know any Panaque freaks that are looking for a new big center piece send um my way?!

Matt can you post a pic of your new little ones belly?

Another question. I saw pics of your Tocantins when it was younger. I think it had a stripped belly? If it did was it always like that or did it change from an odd swirly pattern?

Some pics from today of my Panaque armbrusteri (I think it is anyway), including a belly shot for Jackson. I'm glad you prompted me because I saw that he was a bit too skinny for my liking. Which makes me think I need to treat for parasites/worms since he eats/poos loads.

Off the top of my head I don't know but I looked through my photobucket and found the answer. Yes, striped when small 5-8cm and I can't find any recent ones but I'll try to get some of him now.

I liked the progress made during the years, maybe 5 now. These are oldest to newest and he's about 17cm now.

Welcome to the mess! I'm glad I've encouraged someone else to take the plunge. My first Royal was about 8cm and quickly followed by 3 other smaller ones and then a big 22cm fella that arrived by post. And then another ten or so later I got my 40cm beast.

The Panaque armbrusteri is an interesting fish Matt, do you have any pics of him side by side with your other fish? Would be nice to compare his profile. On a side note, my goldlines are proving hard to photo on the glass but I have not forgotten!

Matt~

The little one is very similar to a few of the ones I have. I saw an x on it's head in the first set of pics I was wrong lol but it has those little bug eyes that are not really redish orage like tocantins and xingu. It also has those odd lines I mentioned some of mine have. The belly is the exact same pattern. I noticed that the Tocantins when small have lines on the belly as do the xingu. I'm saying this from fish I've seen in person and pics. It could differ from fish to fish I guess.
I have one of these 27's in the group who is probably sitting at around 4"tl it's belly still has this pattern the swirly like pattern. IME most juvies who's belly pattern change will start at about the same time the window on the tail is half filled in. Though this was my experience with 190, 330 and 418
