MY fish room is starting to take a move on and is finally up and running.:woohoo::woohoo: What do you guys think? No fish so far and it will be fairly empty until Im lucky enough to get some fry. <3

The tanks from the garage door.

Top tank for L134 pair & Fry growouts: - Currently running a shitty built in sump, soon as I can I will be getting an internal to run along side the sump and give better water quality.

The breeder tank - My first l134 pair will go in this tank.

Let me know on what you think so far. I know its fairly bland at the moment. Any suggestions on the breeding tank would also be appreciated. :dk:

Thanks to all

Paint the back and sides of the breeding tank.
Build a shelf off the side of the rack to hold the canister and raise the height of it as well- it will work better.
Put some of my caves in it

ahha thanks mate, Caves I will certainly have to get some off you when I get my fish, I have a table holding my food and supplements etc. so Might put it on that, although doesn't seem to have problems sucking dirty water and realising cleansed water into the tank. What benefits if I put it higher? just that it will be a bit of a pain because the cord won't reach the power point if I put on the table. Lastly Painting the sides, what is the real benefit? sense of security for fish? the garage is closed and empty the majority of the time only used to get the car out or when I'm in there myself doing maintenance.

cheers

Better flow out of the canister. Water is gravity fed to the filter & pumped back to the tank. The higher the canister must pump the lower the flow will be.

Painting the tank gives security. I also like the look better. All my tanks are either painted or have some kind of covering on sides & back.

Looking good mate, what about some insulation around the tanks? Running tankanon a garage can be costly to run, I have found some foam around each tank cuts down the heating costs alot..

Foam? Styrofoam? kind of wrapped around it? I would have thought the garage wouldn't be too bad in terms of staying quite warm....... Getting into the hotter months now anyways, Like outside now its still 20 deg C

So I went to check on it all this morning and give a day 2 dose of seachem stability. I noticed my breeder tank was a little cloudy, When I say a little I mean there is a slight cloudiness in the tank. What can I do to get rid of this? or will it slowly start to go away after a few days. btw This is the tank thats running the eheim 2215 if that helps.

Thanksss

Thanks mate, Would have thought so. I will just keep any eye on it. On another topic, Does anyone know how to keep my PH around 6.5 for 134s? I have seen buffers that keep the ph around 6.5 but there bloody expensive. cost around $20 for a buffer that keeps PH at 6.5 and treats 720L of water.

most substrats raise ph to around the 7.2ph mark so the right amount of substrate with the right amount of driftwood(which will drops your ph) will give you your disired ph level this is why seting up large systems to run off one sump is a no no unless they keep fish of the same requirements.

maybe try a small bag of crashed shell/coral or a small lime stone in your sump that way you know the water coming out of your sump will be around the 7.2 mark then have a heap of drift in each tank but this will only be good if the flow rate is slow if it is faster you might need to change the bag or just have even less so it can only buff up alittle to the 6.8 mark or so on

good to see that you have been moving forward and doing it right! un like most of us ! well me! lol

not quite a fish room but a breeding rack for sure!
keep up the good work

Thanks buddy, I also have my spray bar above water level by about 2cm or so. The water then falls from the spray bar into the tank which makes a waterfall sound. Is this good or should I move the spray bar down so its fully submerged in the water?

Thanks

That's up to you about the spray bar mate, if you don't mind the sound then I can't see anything wrong with it..if anything the splashing will add extra oxygen into the water

So my 2 tanks have been up and running since saturday. I add Stability everyday and test the water. Todays readers'

Tank 1: PH 7.6, Ammonia 1.0 & Nitrate 10

Tank 2: PH 6, Ammonia 0.50 & Nitrate 5

Trying to get my PH to 6.5, I will add some discus buffer to get it to that. As for Ammonia and Nitrate, is this normal? I thought stability was meant to eliminate these. Are they harmful for L134s? or are they low levels of ammonia and nitrate?

Thanks

Just looking at your stats there, maybe you made a mistake it says
Fishkeeping Experience: Advanced
Breeding Experience: Intermediate
Some of the questions you ask make it sound like your a beginner? Apologies if you are not.

Plecs or not, ammonia kills fish. Nitrates are the natural end product of the denitrifying process. Simple diagnosis, your filters aren't cycled. Last week we're talking about what filter to buy, this week theres fish in the tank. Filters take about 4-6 weeks to cycle & become suitable for supporting fish. You should also check your nitrites.
There hasn't been a product that i've seen that can cycle a filter in days. Most, if effective at all, shorten the cycle time by a few days of the 4-6 weeks.

Also weird why one tank is at pH 7.6 & the other 6. I'd avoid using chemicals to buffer the pH its a never ending struggle. If you've already got your fish in the tanks, changing the water parameters, especially quickly, can cause major problems. Most sources recommend no more than a 0.2 change in pH in 24 hours.
